The National Land Information Service (NLIS) launched in 2001 to provide a single point of electronic access to official sources of data from every local authority in England and Wales and other public sector organisations including HM Land Registry and The Mining Remediation Authority.

NLIS has pioneered many services and features in the searches market, including guaranteed, automated payments for data providers and a seamless LLC1 integration with HM Land Registry for migrated Local Authorities. However, technology and the needs of the market have changed and continue to move at pace. Land Data, the Community Interest Company which runs (under license) and regulates NLIS, is exploring ways in which NLIS can evolve to streamline and improve the Official Searches market, supporting stable property transactions for consumers.
